lo·a, noun: A god in the voodoo religion of Haiti
As dawn arises in a zombie-laden South Africa, a new hell unleashes half a world away in the swamps of Louisiana.
Despite summoning every Loa she could muster, even the great voudon priestess Madame Marie Baptiste neé Dumas couldn’t save her daughter’s husband from his untimely demise. Now convinced that everything is, “just for show”, a cynical Jerrica moves about the world with a sense of recklessness, profiting off of the religion she left behind when she disowned her mother after her husband’s death. Under the guise of “Madame Dumas” she scams helpless clients as she fakes her way to the next check.
With Ben, her Uber fare in tow, Jerrica receives a frantic phone call from her favorite and most profitable client, Judy Baptiste. While imitating a ‘rite of passage’ ritual, a corpse reanimates and attacks, setting off a chilling series of events. With her client now infected, Jerrica is forced into a wild chase to find a cure. They race through the city and bayous, forced to grapple with priests that are far too eager for the end of days, angry redneck attacks, and something lying in wait on the open ocean that’s far more dangerous than the virus that’s on the ground.
Reuniting with the true Madam Dumas seems to be the only option to save Judy…and everyone else. For anyone to survive, Jerrica must truly believe in the thing she’s lost faith in the most: Her mother.
